United States Air Force Service (2002–2013)

Derek proudly served in the United States Air Force from 2002 to 2013 as an Emergency Manager specializing in nuclear, biological, and chemical defense. During this time, he focused on disaster preparedness, force protection, and command post operations.

In 2007, Derek deployed to Iraq, where he supported high-risk missions and helped prepare personnel for complex threat environments. As a result of his service, he earned the Iraq Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, and an Honorable Discharge.

As a result of this experience, Derek developed a disciplined, methodical approach to identifying risks early and responding effectively under pressure.

Nuclear Security & Training Leadership Experience

After leaving the military, Derek continued his career in nuclear security at the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant. Over more than a decade, he advanced from Nuclear Security Officer to Training Instructor and later Security Training Manager.

In these leadership roles, Derek oversaw firearms instruction, hazardous materials preparedness, regulatory compliance, and annual recertification programs. Additionally, as an International Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) certified instructor, he maintained strict performance and training standards for security personnel.

Because of this background, Derek consistently brings a compliance-driven, detail-focused mindset to Home Watch USA’s field operations.

Real Estate & Property Knowledge

Alongside his security career, Derek built more than ten years of experience as a licensed real estate salesperson in the Greater Rochester area. He has worked with Realty USA, Keller Williams Realty, and currently serves as a full-time Real Estate Agent with HUNT Real Estate ERA.

Through residential sales, property management, and maintenance coordination, Derek gained a practical understanding of how homes function over time. Consequently, he recognizes how small issues can quickly turn into costly problems when a property is left unoccupied.
